Big 12 rankings, Week 11: There’s Something About Mary edition

Standard

College football is unpredictable, if nothing else. How else do you explain: Iowa State losing to Nebraska by one, then Colorado by 20? Nebraska losing to Texas, then blasting Oklahoma State and Missouri?  Texas A&M losing by three touchdowns at home to Missouri, then beating Oklahoma by two touchdowns? So it goes.

Nebraska’s one win (or a Missouri loss) away from wrapping up the North, but the Cornhuskers have work left to do with a trip to Texas A&M next.

This week’s rankings are sponsored by “There’s Something About Mary.”

1. NEBRASKA (9-1, 5-1): Last week, beat Kansas 20-3. This week, at Texas A&M. The Cornhuskers have shown the propensity to play to the level of competition. They better Saturday, because Texas A&M is white hot. Bo Pelini? For some reason, he reminds me of this guy …

2. OKLAHOMA STATE (9-1, 5-1): Last week, beat Texas 33-16. This week, at Kansas. In theory, the Cowboys could clinch the South this week. A win over Kansas, plus Oklahoma and Texas A&M losses would lock it up. Give offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen credit. The man can coach. And Mike Gundy? This is definitely him …

3. OKLAHOMA (8-2, 4-2): Last week, beat Texas Tech 45-7. This week, at Baylor. If only the Sooners could play all of their games at home, where they’ve been dominant. Kind of like a hopped-up dog …

4. MISSOURI (8-2, 4-2): Last week, beat Kansas State 38-28. This week, at Iowa State. Sigh, that Texas Tech game. It’s not a stretch to think the Tigers lost the North at Tech, not in Lincoln. But, at least Missouri revived its season like this …

5. TEXAS A&M (7-3, 4-2): Last week, beat Baylor 42-30. This week, vs. Nebraska. Funny how things work out. Jerrod Johnson was the preseason All-Big 12 quarterback, but his backup, Ryan Tannehill, has salvaged the Aggies’ season. Think A&M wishes they could have that 38-35 loss to Oklahoma State back? Actually, the first half of the Aggies’ season went like this …

6. BAYLOR (7-4, 4-3): Last week, lost to Texas A&M 42-30. This week, vs. Oklahoma. Hey, at least the Bears are bowl-eligible, even if those South title hopes went up in smoke. Oh, Baylor, why do you build me up? …

7. KANSAS STATE (6-4, 3-4): Last week, lost to Missouri 38-28. This week, at Colorado. Saturday was the first time I’ve watched a K-State game from start to finish. All I can say is Bill Snyder has done a hell of a job getting this team to six wins. …

8. IOWA STATE (5-6, 3-4): Last week, lost to Colorado 34-14. This week, vs. Missouri. Seriously, Iowa State? You need one win to be bowl-eligible and you lose to Colorado by three touchdowns? I don’t care if you lose your starting quarterback. Awful, just awful. Have you seen my bowl game? Probably not this year …

9. TEXAS TECH (5-5, 3-5): Last week, lost to Oklahoma 45-7. This week, vs. Weber State. Never mind the Red Raiders’ season. Why are you playing Weber State and Houston AFTER the Big 12 schedule? Anyway, Tech fans want to do this with Tommy Tuberville …

10. TEXAS (4-6, 2-5): Last week, lost to Oklahoma State 33-16. This week, vs. Florida Atlantic. I don’t care how much the Longhorns lost from last season, there is no excuse for a team with this much talent to be this bad. Their year has been like this (0:36 mark) …

11. KANSAS (3-7, 1-5): Last week, lost to Nebraska 20-3. This week, vs. Oklahoma State. Kansas actually played relatively well against the Cornhuskers. The Jayhawks just aren’t very good. This clip, well, it has no meaning here. But you can’t do a blog on this movie without including it …

12. COLORADO (4-6, 1-5): Last week, beat Iowa State 34-14. This week, vs. Kansas State. Yes, Dan Hawkins was that bad. His run at CU was full of bloopers …
